About Vase Shelf

In March 2023, I ordered a sunflower-and-daisy mix for my mother's seventieth birthday from a large flower delivery service. What arrived was lilies. My mother is allergic to lilies. She spent the morning sneezing in her kitchen while the arrangement sat on the counter, and I spent it on hold with customer service. Third substitution in a row from that service. I started a spreadsheet.

Since then I've placed somewhere between forty and seventy orders for real occasions: my mother's birthdays, sympathy bouquets for two cousins' funerals, baby shower deliveries for friends now in Portland and Atlanta, and a recurring series of apology arrangements to my sister-in-law in Ohio. Every delivery gets photographed next to the original listing. I track which services swap species, which downgrade the vase and call it "equal or greater value," and which ones actually deliver within the window they advertise. Every order paid for out of pocket.

Not a florist, not a floral designer. A freelance HR consultant in Pittsburgh who got tired of not knowing what would show up at the door.
