About
I'm a 41-year-old freelance HR consultant based in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. My home office is on the second floor of a row house, and one corner of it has looked essentially the same since early 2023: a laptop open to a Google Sheets spreadsheet, a window ledge serving as the fixed background for delivery photographs, a corkboard pinned with listing printouts alongside delivery photos, and a stack of folded cardboard boxes kept as packaging reference.
The first time I ordered same-day flowers across a state line, it was for Portia Calhoun, a college friend now in Atlanta. That order taught me that same-day cutoffs are based on the recipient's local time zone, not mine. Placing an order from Pittsburgh at 1:30 PM when Atlanta's cutoff had already passed at noon meant a next-day delivery, regardless of what the confirmation screen implied. She told me her kids tried to identify the flowers in the arrangement. They couldn't name any of them. We had more to talk about than the bouquet.
What started with one bad order has grown to over seventy spreadsheet rows, covering real occasions: my mother's birthday, sympathy deliveries for two cousins' funerals, baby shower orders for friends in Portland and Atlanta, a recurring series of apology arrangements to my sister-in-law in Ohio. Brenda Taggart, a former colleague who now lives in Columbus, texts me a photo of what arrived before I can even ask. That consistency has made her one of the more reliable data points in the log. Laverne Holcomb, someone I compare spreadsheet data with monthly, tracks rural delivery gaps that my Pittsburgh orders don't surface.
A buyer who kept every receipt and photographed every delivery, with no professional floral background and no AIFD designation, but enough paid orders to have formed views on which services' substitution patterns can be trusted.
